About

The Hip Hound Brace is for Dogs of All Ages

For Young Dogs: The Hip Hound brace is appropriate for young dogs who suffer from low back pain and early hip dysplasia symptoms. It can also support the lower back and hip area for dogs recovering from surgery or injury.

For Senior Dogs: The Hip Hound is great for older dogs who have difficulty getting around due to hip dysplasia, arthritis or general back end weakness and mobility issues.  The brace provides support and stability while helping to decrease pain and inflammation while active.

Please Note: If your dog cannot stand on their own, the Hip Hound mobility brace will not provide enough support. A brace will not provide support for dogs with degenerative myelopathy or a neurological/ neuromuscular disorder.

Available in Sizes Extra-Small Through Extra-large

The Hip Hound brace includes two leg brace panels and a harness. It fits dogs with a height of at least 11 inches and a chest circumference of at least 12 inches. Both the brace unit and harness are adjustable. Since the brace is designed to be used when your dog is active, you can leave the harness on and slip the mesh brace on and off as needed.

Sizing

For a Good Fit, Take Careful Measurements

The Ortho Dog Hip Hound Brace comes with a harness and two leg brace panels in sizes Extra-Small, Small, Medium, Large and Extra-Large. Each size is adjustable to fit a range of measurements. To find your dog’s size, you will need to measure your dogs chest, height and thigh.  If you have a German Shepherd, read our specialized sizing instructions.

How Do I Measure?

See our detailed  instructions and sizing chart below and watch this video tutorial to help ensure proper measurement.

Step-by-Step Measuring Instructions for the Hip Hound Brace

Measuring Tips:

    • Be sure to take all measurements while your dog is standing.
    • Use a soft measuring tape for a snug- but not tight– measurement; you should be able to fit one finger under the tape.
    • Enter your measurements in the purple form at the top of this page to get your dog’s brace and harness size.
    • If you have a German Shepherd, read our specialized measurement instructions.
    • Please note our harness color is determined by size.

Chest Measurement:

Take the Chest Measurement by wrapping the tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. The tape should be snug, with room to fit one finger underneath.

Height:

Take the Height Measurement from the base of the rear paw, straight up to the high point of the hip. Be careful to hold the tape straight up and not round the tape over the back. A rigid yardstick can also work for this measurement.

Thigh:

Take the Thigh Measurement by wrapping the tape around the thigh, halfway between the bend of the knee and the groin. The tape should be snug, with room to fit one finger underneath.

Sizing Charts for the Hip Hound Brace and Harness

Because every dog’s proportions are unique, some dogs may fall outside of these ranges. If that is the case, please check in with us at info@orthodog.com with measurements and photos and we will be happy to help determine the correct size.

Tips for Initial Brace Fitting

  • Before trying the brace on for the first time, create a quiet peaceful environment so your dog feels safe.
  • Unpack the components and allow your pup to sniff and investigate the brace before applying it.
  • We recommend taking your dog on a short, easy, leashed walk once the brace is secured.
  • Time needed to acclimate to wearing a brace will vary depending on each dog’s personality; take things as slow and as easy as your pup needs.
  • Positive reinforcement (treats, encouragement and praise) is essential in helping your dog adapt to wearing a knee or ACL brace.

Quick Tips for Fine-Tuning the Fit:

  • Harness: Should be snug but not tight and fit like a collar around the neck.
  • Thigh Straps: Should sit above the bend of the knee without pulling to high up into the groin. Straps should be snug, but not tight or pinching the skin (you should be able to comfortably fit a finger under the strap.)
  • Leg Panels: The spacer mesh panels designed to provide a slight upward and forward motion which helps hold the femur heads in position. They should be snug on the hips.
  • Leg Panel Adjustment: The velcro under the Ortho Dog logo patch can be adjusted to move the panels further apart or closer together to get the perfect fit.
  • Harness Strap: The strap connecting the brace to the harness can be adjusted by the velcro to hold the leg panels in position with a gentle forward pressure.

Throughout the day if your dog is resting, you can leave the harness on, disconnect the velcro strap and just slip the brace on or off like a pair of pants.

The Hip Hound Brace should always be removed at night so the skin can breathe.

Please also remove the Hip Hound Brace if you are crating your dog or leaving them unattended.

OrthoDogs hip harness has been instrumental in keeping my dog, Gus, from needing surgery on his hip. Diagnosed with dysplasia as a puppy, most recently, now almost 11-year old Gus dislocated his hip. Rest, then reintroducing short walks, coupled with wearing OrthoDogs hip harness has been a godsend for Gus.

I have a 13yo borzoi who has been wearing an Ortho Dog Hip Hound Brace for 8 months now. Emma walks and plays with more confidence when wearing her brace. I have noticed she spends more time with me and the other dogs then she did before wearing the brace. I purchased the brace because Emma was slipping on the tile floors in the house. She fell twice in just a couple days and I was worried she would really hurt herself. She hasn't slipped or fallen since she started wearing the brace! Thank you Ortho Dog for making this affordable product that has made such a difference in Emma's life.

From the correspondence i had with Sarah the whole process of purchasing bubbas hip brace was smooth and enjoyable. And Abby was helpful as well. The shipping was very fast and only took a couple of days. Bubba was a perfect patient. He stood perfectly still for the measurements and also for putting it on him for the first time. That was just before his breakfast so that was his treat for being such a good boy through the process. On our first outing he just walked for a few minutes. Then he began to trot as he normally does and then to my amazement he was running like he did in his earlier years. We hiked on our 180 acre farm for over 2 hours. When we got home he wasn't ready to quit so as he was messing around the sheds and in the woods. When he got back he was missing the right leg section. After a couple of hours of searching the woods in the dark i found it under the shed deck where he sometimes likes to go looking for a possum. I mentioned to Abby that i needed to add some snaps but Sarah recommended getting a seamstress to sew it so i found a lady that owns an alteration business and she stitched it while i waited and only charged me $5. All in all it has been a blessing for bubba and my wife and I. Thanks again. Sincerely Brian &Pam & Bubba

In 2019 Tansy tore one of her back ACLs and the following year, she tore the other back ACL; both were corrected with surgery. However, after that she began developing arthritis in her back and hips. Over the last several months, the signs of aging and the arthritis have quickly caught up with Tansy. She has been having a very difficult time moving around or standing for any length of time. Her front paws began to deform, likely in part due to her compensating for the pain and deformation in her back end. An Aunt told us about OrthoDog and said it had worked wonders for their dog. We knew we had to try it in hopes of giving Tansy a better quality of life for whatever time she has left. Tansy doesn't necessarily like wearing it, and she acts like a bit of a baby about it, but it has been nothing short of a wonderful little miracle seeing our sweet fur-baby being able to move around better, after only a few days of wearing the brace. It's still obvious in her mobility that Tansy is 15 years old, but the Orthodog brace has brought a little bit of her spark back as she seems to be in less pain and able to move around more freely. For all of that, we are extremely grateful and feel the brace is worth every penny! The customer service has also been fantastic - from verifying measurements so we make sure to order the correct size, to consulting on the fit of the brace after we received it. Thank you, Orthodog, for helping us make Tansy's life (and ours in return) better!
